Unit overview

The use of Type 1, Type 1/2, Type 2 or Type 3 Surge protection devices is highly dependent on the location of the equipment and the transition interface of the supply cable between lightning protection zones (LPZs). The aim of this unit is to introduce to you Lightning protection zone concept as per BS EN 62305-4 and BS7671 section 534, and to examine what type of SPDs should be provided at relevant locations appropriately.

Please note, It is recommended that you have studied Unit 5: BS 7671 Regulations on Surge Protection - Part 1, Unit 6: BS 7671 Regulations on Surge Protection - Part 2 and BS 7671 Regulations on Surge Protection - Part 3 to fully appreciate this Unit.

Mr Robin Earl, Market Development Manager, DEHN (UK) Ltd. 

Robin has over twenty years’ experience of the field surge protection, originally trained by DEHN and SOHNE prior to the establishment of the DEHN UK Office. He is currently serving in BS7671 JPEL64 subcommittee D on Surge Protection and Foundation Earthing. He has presented many CPD seminars on Surge Protection and Lightning protection to IET and CIBSE members.

Tony is an independent Chartered Energy and Electrical Engineering Consultant. Tony was the course tutor for the MEng(Hons) degree course in Architectural Science and Engineering Services at Manchester University. He has given lectures in Lightning and Surge Protection to BEng(Hons), MEng(Hons) and MSc students in UK and Overseas universities. He is currently the Chairman of CIBSE Electrical Services Group and representing CIBSE on BS7671 the main JPEL64 committee. He is also External Examiner to the University of Northampton.

Type Unit
What you will learn
At the end of this unit, you will be able to:

1. Understand the Lightning protection zone concept
as per BS EN 62305-4 and BS7671 section 534
2. Understand the reduction of rated lightning impulse level between two different LPZs
3. Understand the LPZ concept describes the installation of Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 SPDs
4. Understand consideration shall be given to the provision of SPDs to protect from other sources
5. Understand the effect of lightning current galvanic conduction through any electrical circuits installed in the LPZ0 zone (e.g., external lighting) can impact on the main electrical installation - examples are included

Who should learn
The course will be useful for those who are involved with the design, installation, inspection, certification and approval/review of a non-complex electrical installation meeting BS7671 requirements for surge protection.
