Unit overview
This unit provides details of the processes used to convert analogue voice into digital format. The conversion using standard coding techniques, followed by the multiplexing process, using standard multiplexing formats are explored, as well as compression techniques used to increase efficiency.
By the end of this course you will be able to:

•List the key stages in the conversion of speech from analogue to digital formats
•Use the correct terminology to describe the digitisation process using standard techniques and formats
•Use diagrams to illustrate how digital voice channels can be multiplexed in order to support efficient transmission systems
•Discuss the benefits and issues relayed to the digitisation process, as well as techniques used to mitigate some of the issues
This unit is for those new to telecoms or for those requiring a better understanding of telecommunication technologies and networks.
