Unit overview
Highlighting the main concepts of the telephone call, this unit puts in place the major elements involved and explores the basic operations involved in connecting people for the purpose of voice communication. The concepts of “access”, telephone “exchanges” and “switching” are developed.
By the end of this course you will be able to:

•Identify the main network elements involved in both a manual and automatic telephony connection
•Describe the purpose of the different elements involved in the telephony connection
•Step sequentially through the operation of the different elements involved in the connection
•Define circuit-switching
This unit is for those new to telecoms or for those requiring a better understanding of telecommunication technologies and networks.
