Unit 1: Welcome and Course Introduction

This unit defines innovation and distinguishes between innovation and invention. We will explore the key theories that have shaped scholarly work on innovation and discuss the different types and patterns of innovation that can emerge over a period of time. We will discuss the idea of innovation diffusion and how innovation is communicated across a network. Finally, we will look at BIM as an innovation.

By the end of this unit, you will:

  • Understand key definitions of innovation.
  • Understand innovation from various standpoints.
  • Understand the relationship of innovation with time, space and people.
  • Understand different types and patterns of innovation, such as: incremental versus radical innovation; product, process and service innovation; disruptive versus sustaining innovation; and open versus closed innovation.
