Many cable types are expected to have good performance in the event of a fire, either to avoid the spread of fire (reaction to fire) or to continue to operate for a period during a fire. In addition, it may be required that the cables should not emit excessive smoke or hazardous substances during a fire.

Trevor Pickard is a self-employed electrical engineering consultant. After serving a student apprenticeship with a Distribution Network Operator (Midlands Electricity Board), Trevor held various engineering positions in the company and its subsequent privatised entities and gained experience in the construction, maintenance and operation of high and low voltage electricity distribution systems. This was followed with posts in Design, Safety, Production Engineering, as Production Manager of a large urban based operational division, as General Manager of the Repair and Restoration department, and as General Manager of the Primary Network department (33kV-132kV). Trevor is still actively involved in the writing of standards in the domestic, European and International arena with BSI, CENELEC and IEC. For many years he lectured for the IET on their various short courses and he has authored books in the City & Guilds Diploma in Electrical Installations series and more recently modules in the Electrical Distributors Association/IET Product Knowledge Programme.
